![]() ![]() ![]() In the words of Franco Berardi: “The shift to the hyper-complex reality of the net- worked world has made it impossible to under- stand and control the relevant flows of information circulating in the infosphere that are constantly stimulating the social brain. Navigatio n must be understood here as the ability to orient oneself within a context of vast u ncertainty, finding landmarks that make it possible to give direction to the action, a capacity that we seem to have lost nowadays. ![]() The problem lies mainly in our inability to navigate this complexity. Therefore, abstrac- tion should not be seen as an evil in itself but as the effect of real material systems nevertheless, there are harmful abstractions, such as those that govern financial capital- ism. From an analytical point of view, abstraction is neither positive nor negative, but a necessary consequence of comple xity at formal and social levels: “it is the price we pay for the benefits accumulated through increasingly complex social structures” (Williams 2013, 70). This can be seen i n phenomena as disparate as the 2008 financial crisis, anthropogenic climate change and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which have far ex- ceeded our forecasting, anticipation and calculation abilities. Our political and economic reality is marked by increasingly interconnected and fragmented systems and processes, which in turn unleash non-linear dynamics and unintended consequences. It is a world that swarms with techno- logical mediation, interlacing our daily lives with abstrac- tion, virtuality, and complexity” (Cuboniks 2018, 117).
